What it involves
Verification asks "did we build the system right?" — checking it against its own requirements through analysis, inspection, demonstration or test. Validation asks the harder question: "did we build the right system?" — checking it actually meets the need it was commissioned for, not just the paperwork describing it. We plan both from the start of a programme rather than bolting them on at the end, defining verification methods against every requirement and keeping evidence tied back to its source as the design evolves.
Why it matters
A system that passes every internal test but solves the wrong problem is still a failure — just a more expensive one to discover. Regulators, customers and auditors don't accept assertions; they want evidence, and evidence gathered under pressure at the end of a programme is invariably weaker than evidence built in from the start. V&V done properly is what turns "we believe this works" into "we can prove this works," on a timeline that doesn't collapse the moment someone asks a hard question.
